What is PRESENCE?

PRESENCE is different from every other class at Formation. In FREEDOM, you follow the beat. In PRESENCE, you learn the choreography. Actual movement sequences, set to specific music, taught piece by piece until the whole thing runs together.

It's for people who've always wanted to actually learn to dance — not just move to music, but know a sequence, own it, and feel what it's like when your body does exactly what the music asks.

The star system makes PRESENCE approachable at every level. One-star classes are for true beginners — every move is isolated and explained before it's combined. Higher star ratings build progressively as your skill grows. You always know where you are and where you're going.

The star system

Know your level. Find your class.

Every PRESENCE class is star-rated so you can choose the right challenge. Start at one star — there's no shame in building from the beginning.

★☆☆

One Star — Beginner

For true beginners to choreography. The Motivator slows everything down, isolates each move, and builds the sequence rep by rep before you ever run it full-out. The best place to start.

★★☆

Two Stars — Intermediate

You've got the basics. Two-star classes spend less time on fundamentals and more time on execution — sharper lines, cleaner timing, more complex combinations.

★★★

Three Stars — Advanced

For movers who are ready to be challenged by complexity, musicality, and precision. Three-star classes assume you can pick up choreography quickly and work on refinement.

What to expect

A typical PRESENCE class.

PRESENCE has a distinct teaching rhythm — isolation, combination, full-out, repeat.

01 · Warm-up

Body prep. Music intro.

Your Motivator warms you up while introducing the musical landscape for today's choreography. Your ears and body start learning together.

02 · Isolation

One move at a time.

Each element of the choreography is isolated and taught individually. Arms, footwork, weight shifts, counts — all broken down before anything is combined.

03 · Combination

Build the sequence.

Isolated elements come together into longer combinations. Slow tempo first, then building. This is where it starts to feel like choreography.

04 · Full-out

Music on. Run the whole thing.

Everything at full tempo, full music, full expression. This is the moment PRESENCE delivers — when the sequence you built runs through your body without thinking.

05 · Repeat + refine

Second pass. More music.

PRESENCE classes often run the same sequence multiple times with increasing freedom. By the last run, you're not just doing the moves — you're dancing.

First time?

Start at ★☆☆. Always.

Even if you have dance background — start at one star to understand Formation's system and teaching approach. You can always move up next week.

Who PRESENCE is for

For people who want to actually learn to dance.

PRESENCE draws a specific kind of person — someone who wants to know they got it right.

Anyone who's always wanted to learn choreography but didn't know where to start.

PRESENCE one-star is literally designed for that person. No background assumed. The star system gives you a clear path from your first class to advanced work.

Former dancers who want to sharpen their skills or reconnect with choreography.

If you danced in school or earlier in life, PRESENCE is how you pick it back up in a structured, musical environment designed for adults.

FREEDOM regulars who want to add the "actually learning moves" dimension.

FREEDOM frees you. PRESENCE teaches you. Many Formation members do both — the two formats build on each other in ways that make you better at both.

People who've tried dance classes elsewhere and felt like they couldn't keep up.

PRESENCE star ratings exist so you never walk into something designed for a different skill level. That's the whole point of the system.

What to wear and bring

Dress to move with precision.

Clean indoor sneakers or dance shoes

Sneakers with smooth or semi-smooth soles work best, you'll be pivoting, turning, and shifting weight frequently. Dance sneakers are ideal if you have them.

Comfortable, flexible workout clothes

PRESENCE involves arms, legs, and the full body working together. Wear something that doesn't restrict range of motion in any direction.

A water bottle (no glass)

Choreography is more cardio than it looks. You'll want water between sections.

An open mind about starting at ★

The most common PRESENCE mistake is starting too high. One-star is where you build the foundation that makes everything else click. Towels and lockers included.
