Beginner-friendly dance fitness classes in Vancouver. Music-driven movement designed for people with zero experience. Two ways to start.
Your first class, moment by moment.
First, breathe. Most of our clients arrive having never taken a dance class before. Here's how a typical first visit goes:
Arrive 15 minutes early
We'll greet you, give you a quick tour, show you the lockers, and answer your questions.
Find your spot
The room is set up so no one's "in the back" or "in the front" everyone has space.
Class starts
Lights dim. Music takes over. Your Movement Motivator coaches every move with options to scale up or down.
Sweat. Laugh. Maybe cry
It happens. The room holds it. You'll leave lighter than you came in.
Towel waiting
Towel service at the end. Stay for the post-class energy.
What class should you start with?
Every Formation class is built to welcome a first-timer. Pick whatever sounds good. If you want to ease in:
FREEDOM
High energy and the choreography moves fast. That's by design. Don't try to memorize the steps your first time. You're not there to perform; you're there to move.
PRESENCE (one-star)
For true beginners to choreography. The one-star marker means we slow it down, isolate the moves, and build the sequence rep by rep before you ever run it full out.
POWER
Strength meets choreography. Progressions and regressions throughout — show up where you are, your Movement Motivator does the rest.
STEP
The classic step bench reimagined as choreography. Big cardio, simple counts, real fun. We teach the fundamentals every time.
SCULPT
Lower-impact, full-body strength built around music. Easy to follow on day one. You'll feel it tomorrow.
But what if I…
The four things we hear most.
"I have no rhythm."
Most of our regulars said the same on day one. Rhythm isn't innate, it's built rep by rep.
"I'm not in shape enough."
There's no fitness prerequisite. Show up where you are.
"I'll look stupid."
The room is dim. Everyone's focused on themselves. No one is watching you.
"I won't keep up."
Movement Motivators offer alternatives in real time. Modify anything.

I used to feel very intimidated by the idea of going to dance classes, but with Formation found a supportive space that’s welcoming for all levels and so fun. I love that they have such a variety of classes, from learning choreography (Presence) to step/strength (Power) or a cardio dance party (Freedom). Going to their classes is something I look forward to, and I consistently leave feeling better than when I walked in.— Kristy k.
This studio is truly for everyone and their dance-based classes are what you make it. Experienced instructors provide a strong foundation of steps and every individual at any dance level has the freedom to spice things up. The variety of classes (cardio/strength and conditioning/ choreography focused) allows for a thorough workout of the mind and body.— Denise C.
From the moment I stepped into Formation, I felt an immediate sense of belonging. And that is very surprising given that I am innately aware that I not a good dancer, and therefore was quite unsure and insecure when I had booked my trial class here. The welcoming atmosphere created by the Saschie, Roman, every single instructor, staff and fellow dancers (and Hiro too!) makes it easy for newcomers to feel at home.— Ananya g.
