STEP
Step-based cardio with elevation, coordination, and rhythm. The classic step format reimagined with Formation's music-first approach. Big cardio. Real fun.
STEP is cardio built around an elevated platform and choreography that uses every inch of it. If you remember step aerobics from the 90s, forget what you remember — STEP at Formation is driven by contemporary music and coached with the same intentionality as every other class here.
The elevation creates natural resistance. The choreography creates coordination. The music makes the whole thing feel like play. Every fundamental is taught in class, so no experience with step is required — you'll pick up the basics by the end of your first 20 minutes.
High cardio output. Coordination work. Music that makes 60 minutes disappear.
A typical STEP class.
STEP follows a build — fundamentals first, combinations next, full intensity last.
Learn the platform. Learn the moves.
Every STEP class starts with the fundamentals — basic step patterns taught to the beat before anything complex is introduced. If it's your first time, this is where you catch up.
Build the sequence, piece by piece.
Your Motivator introduces combinations one element at a time, then strings them together. The choreography grows more complex as the class progresses.
Full speed. Full music. Full elevation.
Once the combinations are in place, the tempo goes up and you run everything full-out. Peak cardio. The moment STEP earns its reputation.
Off the bench. Last push.
Some STEP classes finish with a floor section — bodyweight cardio work without the bench to burn out what's left in the tank.
Slow it down. Stretch it out.
A proper cool-down and stretch targeting the legs, hips, and everything the bench worked. You'll feel this one tomorrow.
Arrive 15 minutes early.
We'll show you how to adjust bench height and set you up before class. Everything else gets taught in the room.
For cardio lovers who want coordination too.
STEP draws a surprisingly diverse crowd. Here's who finds it and loves it.
Pure cardio machines are boring for a lot of people. STEP gives you cardio that requires focus — the coordination challenge makes the time disappear.
STEP is inherently musical — the choreography is built around the beat. If you like the satisfaction of a movement pattern coming together, STEP delivers that repeatedly.
STEP is one of the most distinct formats at Formation. If everything you've tried feels the same, STEP probably won't.
Because every STEP fundamental is taught in class, there's no assumed knowledge. You'll be keeping up within 20 minutes of your first class.
Shoes matter most in STEP.
You're stepping on and off an elevated bench repeatedly. You need ankle and lateral support — running shoes are not ideal for STEP. Cross-trainers, aerobics shoes, or training shoes are all good.
High knees, wide steps, side movements — wear something that gives you full range of motion in the legs.
STEP produces significant sweat. Bring water.
Steppers are provided. Your Motivator will show you how to adjust the height before class. Towels and lockers included.
