A First Timer's Guide to Formation
We are delighted you are spending some time with us. I’m going to break this down from the beginning so you feel like you know everything you could possibly need to know before walking through our doors.
First, the most common thing someone says to the team when they are thinking about joining is “I want to do it but I can’t dance.” Almost everyone says that. The beauty in that is you can all know you’re in the same boat. But really, it’s expected and we’ve got your back. You’re coming to a class to learn. Learning is a part of the process and we have no expectations. In fact, our goal when you’re with us is to help you liberate you from your own judgements. Let’s mess up together, we’ll laugh through it and then we’ll keep going.
What class should you take first?
Freedom or Power is what I suggest as your first experience.
Freedom is a non-stop movement class, think of us as your metronome but you can do the movements at an intensity that suits you. It’s a cardio party and is great for newbies because there’s lots of repetition and you follow along with the instructor the whole time.
Power has the least amount of actual dancing and uses your body weight, dumbbells and bands as you work through resistance. All of our strength training movements have a connection to the music and not just a workout over music. We have dance moments injected into it but your outcome here is a full body workout. You’ll do part of the class on your feet and part on the mat.
Presence is routine based so it’s as much a mental workout as it is a physical one. Our routines are always beginner-friendly but if you’re not used to learning choreography, starting with Freedom is a good way to go because you’ll be introduced to a lot movement that you’ll find in our routines. This will help you feel more at ease when you learn choreography. If you are going for Presence for your first class, join in for Part One as everyone will be starting from the beginning. Part Two offers a recap of the previously taught material before we add which really helps new dancers feel more comfortable with the movements. If you do Part One and Two of the same routine and you’ll notice you’ll pick up the movement more comfortably and muscle memory will probably surprise you as you go through the recap on Part One.
Booking
This part is easy. Create your account. Purchase your package. Click in to book your class.
A couple of pro-tips here. If you hit My Account > Person Icon > My Classes you’ll see what you have upcoming and where you can cancel them by clicking “unreserve.” If you’re cancelling and your class starts in 12 hours or less you’ll see “late cancel” which means you’ll lose your class credit. Same applies if you no-show to your booked class.
The schedule is opened for booking for the following week at 7PM on Sunday nights.
What to wear and bring
Wear what you are comfortable sweating in. Tanks, tees, leggings and track pants are all commonly seen at the studio. Shoes should be cross-trainers or runners and be supportive. Please also make sure they are clean, indoor-only shoes.
We have sparkling and chilled water available for you to refill your water bottles and water for sale if you forget your water bottle. We do not provide cups for personal use. Please note glass water bottles/mason jars are not permitted in the studio.
Towel service is also included. After class if you are refreshing with us we have two spa-like showers and full amenities including the Sangre de Fruta shower collection, blow driers and a straightener.
If you book a Power class you can rent a yoga mat for $2 or get year-long unlimited access for $40. Or bring your own.
Upon arrival
We suggest arriving at least 10 minutes early for your first class so we can give you the full tour and acquaint you with the studio.
Come down the stairs and check in at reception. Give us your name. You can then hang your coat on the coat rack and store your belongings in the keyless lockers. Directions on how to use them are just inside the door.
Go hang in the living room. Pick up a connection card if you’re in the mood; these are conversation prompts we have designed, or check out one of our books on the coffee table. You’re also welcome to peruse the wellness and branded products we have for sale.
Get in Formation
We’ll open the doors and let you know to join us in the studio. For Power, you’ll grab yourself a set of weights and bands. Otherwise snag a towel and find an X on the floor. Aside from helping you stay well spaced, the X represents the TURN OFF part in of our slogan. Leave everything else outside those doors. Turn off. Turn up. And Get Down.
After your sweat session
High-fives all around. You’ve done it! Make sure to give yourself a refresh spray with our Vitruvi face mists. More high fives.
I hope that help you to know exactly what to expect. Did I miss anything? Holla in the comments if so. Looking very forward to meeting you at Formation Studio.
