Finding Purpose, PechaKucha Vol. 55

Much like rhythm everyone has a purpose. Whether you know it or not it is there. Our purpose was inspired and cultivated deeply based on how my younger sister moved through the world.

Dates are a funny thing. While some barely register the number it is in the month or the day of the week, to others, the calendar is filled with peaks and valleys of emotional memories. Birthdates, wedding anniversaries, loses, first kisses, new pets, each date reminding of something precious in the past.

As the ninth anniversary of losing my sister, Chantal, approached, I had the privilege of reflecting on the time that had passed with an unusual motivation. Roman and I were presenting at an event called PechaKucha, a creative speaker series where you share twenty slides and have only twenty seconds per slide to share about the topic of your choosing.

We knew we wanted to talk about our purpose in creating Formation and with the hopes that it could potentially help other’s find their purpose too. We decided to split the talk into sharing some of the individual struggles and learning experiences we had and how that led us to creating the studio.

Four lessons on our journey to purpose

1) Be in relationships where you are valued for who you are intrinsically.

2) Awareness of the story you tell yourself about yourself.

3) Acceptance. Meet ourselves where we are so we can build forward.

4) Find strength in service. Focus less on what we want and more on what we can give.

For me, nine years has provided a lot of healing and space for me to understand the way I’ve changed as I’ve navigated such a significant loss. I am now able to wade into this life event without the same kind of volatile pain it once had and this moment of reflection allowed me to see so many positives in the journey and the pivotal moments that directed its trajectory: seeing a grief counsellor, going to a dance class, the cathardic experience of speaking in front of a group of strangers about the most painful moments. All stops along this beautiful path of life.

If you’re struggling with finding your purpose or simply want to learn more about how we found ours watch our talk linked below. Thank you to PechaKucha for having us and all the other presenters that night who shared such engaging stories.
